What are SAE grades?

publicat in: News // Publicata pe 09.07.2014

The SAE viscosity grade is a system based on viscosity measurement. The SAE system established the following grades according to the viscosity of motor oils: SAE 0W; SAE 5W; SAE 10W; SAE 15W; SAE 20W; SAE 30; SAE 40; SAE 50; SAE 60. The W symbol indicates the appropriate degree of use in low temperature conditions.

The lower the number, the lower the temperature at which the oil can be used for safe protection. SAE 20 and SAE 20 W are two different classifications. An SAE 20 oil reaches the viscosity requirements of SAE 20W oil and vice versa.

Oils that do this are rated SAE 20W-20. This multigrade ability increases the number of uses of an oil because it meets the requirements of two or more classifications.

The symbol W denotes the properties of the oil at low temperatures. Figures not accompanied by the W symbol indicate properties at high temperatures.

Viscosity grade SAE 5W-30; 5W-40 : Temperature conditions: below -20ºC. Description: Very good fuel economy, low temperature performance for most recent generation cars. Especially recommended for new cars.

SAE 10W-30 viscosity grade : Temperature conditions: above -20ºC. Description: The most commonly recommended viscosity grade for most automotive engines, including high performance multi-valve and turbo / supercharged engines.

SAE 10W-40 viscosity grade : Temperature conditions: above -15ºC. Description: The first "multigrade" product. A good choice to control engine wear and prevent oil wear due to oxidation. Note: Always check the data sheet or warranty requirements before using this lubricant.

SAE 20W-50 viscosity grade : Temperature conditions: above -5ºC. Description: Maximum protection for performance engines, which operate at high speeds. It is a very good choice for high temperatures or heavy loads (driving in the desert or towing heavy loads at high speed for long periods of time).

Viscosity grade SAE 30 and 40 : Temperature conditions: above 0ºC, respectively above 5ºC. Description: For cars and vans, where recommended by the manufacturer. Not recommended when cold starting may be required.

Note: It is very important to consult the technical manual of the vehicle in order to correctly determine the degree of viscosity.
