The American Petroleum Institute has developed a classification system to identify oils capable of meeting the requirements of several types of engines. The API system has two general categories: the S series and the C series. The S classification covers the properties of oils for gasoline or propane fueled engines.
If an oil passes a series of tests on specific engines, then it can be API classified. The classification increases in alphabetical order as the performance level of the lubricants increases. Each new classification replaces the previous ones.
SL oil can be used for any type of engine, except for those on which the manufacturer writes "oil without detergent". SA and SB are detergent-free oils not recommended without a specification to this effect. The warnings on engines built between 1980 and 1989 call for SF oils, while those built between 1990 and 1993 call for SG oils. Starting in 1996, API SJ oils are specified, and those manufactured from 1994 to 1997 specify API SH oils. Since 2001, SL oil has been introduced.
It has the role of reducing fuel consumption and gas emissions. C series type ratings are for diesel engines. These are: CA, CB, CC, CD, CD-II, CE, CF, CF-II, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4 and CI-4. Unlike the S classification, the C classifications are not interchangeable. CF, CF-2, CH-4 and CI-4 classifications are specific for different applications.
