Oil is the first element that influences the durability of an engine. It contains two important components:
Base oils are the main part of the oil.
It lubricates the internal moving parts. Engine oil base oils can consist of: petroleum, chemically synthesized materials, a combination of synthetic and petroleum materials.
A petroleum base oil contains (in varying percentages) components from the oil that form the final product. In general, base stock petroleum molecules are long carbon bonds that can be sensitive to shock and boil at relatively low temperatures. Engine temperatures weaken these molecular bonds, changing the physical properties of the oil.
The difference compared to synthetic base oils is that the molecules are much more impact resistant.
